El Negro Blanco con punta o Snowbush Spanworm ( Melanchroia chephise ) es una polilla del Geometridae de la familia. Se encuentra desde Florida y de Texas , al sur con Paraguay . Strays se han registrado desde Arizona , Oklahoma , Arkansas , Kansas y de Illinois .

La envergadura es de unos 33 mm. Los adultos son en el ala de septiembre a diciembre.

Las larvas se alimentan de Euphorbiaceae especies, incluyendo Breynia y Phyllanthus .


The White-tipped Black or Snowbush Spanworm (Melanchroia chephise) is a moth of the Geometridae family. It is found from Florida and Texas, south to Paraguay. Strays have been recorded from Arizona, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Illinois.

The wingspan is about 33 mm. Adults are on wing from September to December.

Larvae feed on Euphorbiaceae species, including Breynia and Phyllanthus.

Colobura, es un género de lepidópteros perteneciente a la subfamilia Nymphalinae en la familia Nymphalidae que se encuentra desde México a Sudamérica.

La tribu Coeini comprende de 6 géneros - Colobura , Baeotus , Historis , Pycina , Smyrna y Tigridia .
Hay 2 Colobura especies - dirce y annulata , ambos se encuentran en toda la región neotropical.
Colobura dirce puede distinguirse de annulata por la banda submarginal más amplio sobre las alas anteriores es inferior, y por las ligeras diferencias en las marcas sub-costal.
Las mariposas se sientan habitualmente en los troncos de los árboles en una postura cabeza abajo, a una altura de unos 2 metros, para empaparse de la savia y la humedad de las grietas en la corteza. Si se acercaron a veces tratan de evadir el intruso corriendo hacia el lado opuesto del árbol, y si siguen, retornará a su posición original - literalmente forzar al observador a correr en círculos después de ellos. Ellos son extremadamente reacios a tomar vuelo cuando se alimenta, y si se ven obligados a hacerlo regresan rápidamente a reanudar la alimentación.
Colobura dirce se distribuye desde México hasta Argentina.
Hábitats
Las razas de mariposas en bosques primarios y secundarios en altitudes entre 0-1400m pero se encontraron con mayor frecuencia a altitudes inferiores a 800 metros. Se encuentra tanto en bosques de hoja caduca y de hoja perenne, y también es común en los huertos.

Colobura, is a genus of moths of the subfamily Nymphalinae the Nymphalidae family found from Mexico to South America.

The Coeini tribe comprising of 6 genera - Colobura, Baeotus, Historis, Pycina, Smyrna and Tiger Lily.
There are 2 species Colobura - dirce annulata and both are found throughout the Neotropics.
Colobura dirce annulata can be distinguished from the broader submarginal band on the forewing is less, and the slight differences in the sub-costal marks.
Butterflies usually sit on tree trunks in a head down position, at a height of about 2 meters, to soak up the sap and moisture from cracks in the bark. If they approached sometimes try to evade the intruder running to the opposite side of the tree, and if followed, will return to its original position - literally forcing the observer to run in circles after them. They are extremely reluctant to take flight when feeding, and if forced to do so quickly return to resume feeding.
Colobura dirce is distributed from Mexico to Argentina.
habitats
Breeds butterflies in primary and secondary forests at altitudes between 0-1400m but found more frequently at lower altitudes 800 meters. Found in both deciduous and evergreen, and is also common in gardens.
